How To Buy A Vacuum Cleaner December 26, 2006

Are you in the market for a new vacuum cleaner? If you are then you have probably noticed that there are hundreds of vacuums to choose from. So how do you choose the right one? You might think that you need to spend hundreds of dollars to get a good one but this is not true. This article will give you some tips on what to look for to get the best vacuum at the best price.

The first thing you should look at is the overall design of the vacuum. If it looks flimsy and poorly constructed then it is probably a piece of junk. Choose vacuums that are well designed and solidly constructed. This means that they will probably last you longer.

After you have found a solid design you need to look at the vacuum brush. Look on the bottom of the vacuum and find the agitator or brush. A well designed brush will have a beater bar on it. A beater bar is a raised metal bump which will separate and lift the carpet fibers. It makes vacuuming more effective.

Next look at the tools that come with the vacuum. Are they well designed? Can you quickly change from floor vacuuming to using the tools? Are the tools stored somewhere on the vacuum? You want to choose a vacuum that is the most usable.

Finally look at the vacuum motor. Be careful though because manufacturers often quote weird numbers to make their product look better. They usually only tell you the amps which is how much power the motor consumes. This doesn’t tell you how efficient it is. Look for a measure of the air watts to see how much vacuum it produces. Choose the vacuum that produces the most air watts.

That’s all there is to it. It might be difficult to do the research but doing it will greatly improve your odds of finding a quality vacuum. Good luck and happy shopping. For largest selection of vacuums on the web visit http://www.allvaccumcleaners.info

Surveillance Cameras for Small Business December 26, 2006

Oh, for the good old days when you could leave your car doors unlocked while you went into the local store and were greeted by someone who knew your first name. And does anyone remember a time when a shop owner could go into the back room to help a customer, without worrying about that suspicious looking character grabbing something off the shelf and heading for the door? In some small towns, this still exists. But for the rest of us, it will likely never be that simple again.

Today, surveillance cameras have become less of a luxury, and more of a necessity for businesses of all sizes. Whether you want to prevent shoplifting, employee theft or vandalism, security cameras are a cost effective way to keep an eye on your store, warehouse, or parking lot. They can provide peace of mind for business owners as well as customers who may be concerned about leaving their vehicles unattended while they shop.

Years ago surveillance cameras were expensive to purchase and maintain, but these days you can set up a surveillance system for only a few hundred dollars, or you can set up a more advanced surveillance system with multiple cameras for just a couple of thousand dollars. If this sound expensive to you, consider how much it would cost to pay three or four employees to stand around watching your parking lot for suspicious activity. Also, surveillance cameras can record what they see, which is far more useful to the police than having a person try to remember and describe what they saw.

Just about any business can benefit from surveillance cameras.

Retail store owners can monitor employee activity as well as deter shoplifting.

Office buildings can provide more security for their employees who walk through the parking lot at night to get to their vehicles. For you business owners who want to keep an eye on things while you’re away from work, many surveillance systems can easily be set up for remote viewing from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

Day care centers, and even dog kennels can offer their customers more peace of mind by allowing them to remotely view their children or pets from anywhere with an internet connection.

These are just a few examples; the list goes on and on. The bottom line is no matter what business you’re in, if you have employees, customers, or a parking lot, then surveillance cameras are well worth looking in to.

Requirements Of A Good Home Theater System December 26, 2006

The audio of a good home theatre system is very important. Though a lot of HDTVs may deliver good quality audio, not all built-in speaker systems will be satisfactory. If you have invested a great deal of money in getting a system that gives you top quality images then you may not want to compromise with the audio. You will require high-end audio to enjoy your home theater system. For this you will require a good set of speakers and a receiver.

Home theater and the standard stereo receivers are alike – the home theater receivers will support more channels. While the stereo receivers have only about two channels the home theater receivers support up to either five to seven channels.

Receivers must have enough output power. They must have the power to drive a large number of speakers. High power is required to get ample volume and noise-free sound. The HDTVs cannot deliver 10 watts on each speaker. In home theater systems it can be between 30-50 watts or maybe even more on each channel. High power will help you enjoy your home theater system better, but remember, high power is expensive.

Receivers must have lots of ports and different variety of ports as this will help connect other devices you might want to use through them. You will need two HDMI that is High Definition Multimedia Interface ports and you will have to attach other components like video and speaker connectors. You could also have an FM-tuner and satellite radio receiver fixed to it.

A speaker system consists of three speaker sets. If you cannot get extra speakers then you could use the stereo system already available at home. If you have extra speakers and your receiver has seven channels then you can have multiple speakers and connect each speaker to each channel.

To make your system one of the best and the most powerful ones you could use five speakers. You could use front-channel and surround system speakers on both the sides and one speaker at the center called the center-channel speaker. A special sixth one, an extra speaker that is called a sub-woofer may be added.

The speaker at the center, called the center-channel plays the conversation and the left and right units produce background and other sound effects. There may be a certain amount of overlapping between sources in any system otherwise it could sound unnatural.

The sub-woofer carries very low frequency sounds like the special effects in movies, gunshots, crashing buildings, jets etc.

The surround speakers are placed behind or onto the sides of the system and they produce the three hundred and sixty degree effect that all of us are used to from multiplexes and theaters. In addition to this, 3-D audio may also be added.

You must get a video-shielded system as the modern day HDTV sets do not have an electron gun and are not sensitive to magnets that are in the speaker systems.

Any set you buy has to be synchronized. Most manufacturers make sure that the speakers they offer for sale have seamless integration. Before buying a system you must ensure that it is able to produce a realistic, high-end audio experience.

Five Tips For A Great Software Demo December 26, 2006

Posted by andy2007 in Software.
add a comment

Whether you need to close a sale, gather end-user feedback, show progress to your customer, or simply explain how your product works, sooner or later, you will need to demo your software product.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform hundreds of demos to audiences of various sizes. I’ve also had the chance to attend demos hosted by others. The following represent the top 5 tips I’ve learned over the last decade regarding demos.

Manage Your Audience’s Expectations

Have you ever gone to see a movie everyone raved about and walk out totally disappointed? More often than not, moviegoers feel let down not because the picture was bad, but rather because it was worse than they anticipated. It didn’t meet their expectations.

Similarly, if people show up to a demo thinking they’re about to see a finished product, they expect it to be virtually defect-free, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly. They wouldn’t be impressed for example with a Web-based application that contains typos or JavaScript errors if they’re under the impression it’s going live in a week. However, if they know beforehand that you’re presenting a throwaway prototype, this same audience will be much more lenient. And they will gladly provide much-needed feedback to help you with your work in progress.

Managing your audience’s expectation is critical to a successful demo. If you want them to walk away from your presentation pleased, make sure you set the right expectations beforehand. Be honest with them. Don’t try to oversell your demo. Just sell it, and try to over deliver.

One Bad Apple Spoils The Whole Bunch

All it takes to screw up a demo is one person. If someone starts negatively critiquing every single widget in your application or constantly interrupts you simply because he/she likes to hear the sound of his/her own voice, your demo will be a disaster. It is your job to ensure that these bad apples don’t show up to your presentation.

Unless you’re hosting a closed-door demo, it’s very hard to control who will attend it. Omitting someone from your invitation list doesn’t guarantee they won’t hear about your demo through word-of-mouth and simply show up.

Here are a couple of ways to trick bad apples into not attending your demo:

* Create a scheduling conflict for those bad apples. Make sure they are busy, or better yet, out of the office when your demo takes place.

* Book two separate demos. Invite the people whose feedback you truly value to the first demo and the bad apples to the second. More often than not, each group will show up to the demo they’re respectively invited to. When it’s time for the second demo, go ahead and give it your best shot, or if you don’t have time, simply cancel it.

I’m well aware that these two tips sound like an excerpt from Scott Adams’s Dilbert And The Way Of The Weasel, but unless you feel comfortable telling your peers, superiors or customers not to show up to your demo, these two options are pretty much all you’re left with.

Do A Practice Run

I attended a demo last week hosted by the CEO of a local start-up. After meeting with him at a trade show, he managed to convince me that his company had developed a technology that could solve one of my client’s needs. I therefore agreed to give him 30 minutes of my time so he could demonstrate his product’s capabilities.

I didn’t need 30 minutes to realize I didn’t want to do business with him. All I needed was 30 seconds.

This guy couldn’t even log in his own Web-based application! He spent the first 10 minutes of the demo looking for a password.

Always do a practice run on the system that you’re going to use during the actual demo. You might know the application like the palm of your hand, but if someone else has access to your demo system, who knows what shape it’s in. They might have removed services, upgraded components or, as was the case with this CEO, changed the user credentials without informing you.

Unless you don’t mind looking like a fool, always do a practice run on your demo system before presenting to your audience.

Pay Attention To Details

The hundreds of demos I’ve performed over the years have taught me that people pay more attention to how the application looks than what it does. You software might be the solution to world-hunger but if a member of your audience notices a typo in your GUI, he/she will point it out!

Readers are especially distracted by readable content – and that’s a fact. Deal with it by carefully reviewing the text on your interface and in your graphics. If you don’t have the time to review and finalize the text, use Lorem Ipsum.

Lorem Ipsum has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, thereby making it look like readable English yet not distracting your readers. I now develop new prototypes strictly with Lorem Ipsum and add actual text when and only when I have time to write content that I know won’t become a subject of discussion at my next demo. I strongly advise you to do the same.

Point Out The (Obvious) Bugs

Software contains bugs. It’s that simple. Anyone who doesn’t agree with that statement clearly hasn’t worked in the software industry for long. Although we sometimes strive for defect-free products, reality is complex systems always contain defects – even when they’re generally available.

Doing a practice run before your demo will allow you to identify and resolve the showstoppers, and using Lorem Ipsum will deal with the nitty-gritty details that would otherwise distract your audience. But what about the other defects attributed to Murphy’s Law?

In the event that an obvious bug does display itself during your demo, point it out!

In all likelihood, your audience will have already noticed the bug. Any attempt to hide it will give them the impression that you’re not being honest. Consequently, they’ll start to wonder what else you’re trying to cover up.

Point out the bug, explain that you have a solution, confidently state that the fix will be implemented by a specific date, and move on. This sincere behavior will reassure your audience that (a) you’re not trying to sweep one under the rug and (b) the defect will be resolved by the time they deploy your system.

I’m not advocating that you go hunting for bugs during your demo. If you can circumvent them by any means, please do so. But if a defect does surface during your presentation, don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. The only person you’ll be kidding is yourself.

Conclusion

There you have it. Five tips for a great software demo.

1. Manage your audience’s expectations
2. Ensure that bad apples don’t ruin the bunch
3. Do a practice run
4. Pay attention to details and use Lorem Ipsum
5. Point out the obvious bugs

Do these 5 tips represent all I’ve learned over the hundreds of demos I’ve hosted? Absolutely not! The hardest part about writing this article was probably limiting it to 5 tips. I could have easily thrown in 5 more tips such as (a) control the situation, and (b) always have a plan B. But the goal wasn’t to point out all the tips that can help you out. Only the very top five! Small Appliance Parts December 26, 2006

If you really think about it, it’s the small appliance parts that make your everyday life so much easier. You wake up in the morning and you use an oven toaster – those are small appliance parts working right there. In the late afternoon in the office, you pour yourself some coffee from the coffeemaker – those are small appliance parts working again.

Indeed, most of our day is spent depending on small appliance wonders, and it’s only right that we learn to use them safely and that we prolong their useful lives by taking care of them. Below are some useful tips.

Follow safety instructions. Never forget to read the manufacturer’s handbook, because it contains pertinent information about the care and use of your small appliance and its parts. Be extra careful with small kitchen appliances – not all of them can get wet. Never plunge small kitchen appliances in dishwasher water, for example, unless the handbook tells you that it’s safe. Negligence or simple actions like this can hurt you.

Be careful where you plug appliances. Make it a habit to plug your small appliances directly into wall outlets whenever you can. If you have to use extension cords, read the cord’s electrical rating first; it should be able to handle wattage that is either at least equal to or more than your small appliance’s wattage. Overloading can cause your small appliance parts to ignite and possibly cause a fire. Also, remember to turn your small appliance off before you unplug it. Never attempt to pull out the plug by pulling the cord; instead, firmly hold the plug and then disconnect.

Clean small appliances with proper chemicals. You can possibly damage small appliance parts if you clean them incorrectly or use the wrong chemical, so again, refer to your manufacturer’s manual. Some nonstick surfaces can be cleaned with off-the-rack cleaners, but be careful not to do this too often, as it may cause surface chipping or fading.

Natural Skin Care Tips December 26, 2006

How many times did it ever happen that you watch at the beauty pageants and have wondered if you can also possess the same texture of skin that the ramp scorchers you are seeing so gleefully flaunt? Or is it some untimely ageing had taken a toll of your once smooth and soft skin? Well Nature has its own course of mending whatever little scars it creates over anything. Those who were down earlier probably would feel a bit easier.

It is too good to have a great skin, and is the former requisite headed for an excellent makeup. Skin therefore plays a vital role in our life, how one looks and feels directly relates to ones skin Making the best choices for our bodies, and ultimately our skin, is achieved through diet/ food, exercise, regular professional treatments, personalized homecare, and a healthy mental attitude.

Undertaking health and beauty “rituals” indiscriminately – slowing time and gravity’s tentacles continues to lead us on a trail that has been philosophized throughout history and evolving into the current trends of spending quite a handsome amount to the pocket of your Javed Habibs and God knows who else. Beauty comes from within, for the beauty that is without resemblances is the beauty that is within oneself, a beauty that makes each person unique.

The type of skin you have is dependant on your genes, sex, age, environment, structure and regeneration. How you treat your skin will always be evident in your face, hands and body. Some say it’s never too early or too late to begin looking after your skin.

This is an era where people try to pull two opposite ends together as far as possible. So in this age of intense pollution reckless urbanization and all other factors that play a lead role in damaging your skin, still remaining a “conch-shell skin possessor” would demand your skin cleansed, because pollution, grease and grime cling to the skin, clogging pores, while the body eliminates toxins through perspiration. If the cleansing process is not thoroughly undertaken, the skin will look and feel sluggish, tired and minor skin problems and irritations will transpire.

Try and explore the methods to keep up a skin that ever lasts for your life by different ways. For example, proper diet is giving major importance (sorry to break the hearts of rash eaters) to the shine of skin. A diet for blemish-prone skin must be consistently high in protein and fresh raw fruit and vegetables. There are some regulations to observe in the diet.

Although intense exposure to the sun can produce symptoms of aging and can even predispose it to cancer, constant little exposure to sun light in your day’s schedule is important to rejuvenate your skin. But at the same time it should be pointed out that the sun rays in the current situation can do a lot of damage than good. The most damaging effect of the sun is that it dehydrates the skin causing it to become dry and rough and wrinkled, freckles, pigmentation and patches may also occur. An immediate reaction is expansion of blood vessels that is why skin looks flushed, red and gets tanned if stayed out in the sun for long. However sun is very good for children, as they require Vitamin D, which is abundant in sunlight for their growth and metabolism.

There are actually some secrets to choose the right method to care your skin. Some tips you would love to follow while you plan a day in beach. Your skin can also shine with the fragrances of Aromatherapy.

There are special tips to follow, to prevent your skin from Anti aging. Your skin in addition sometimes needs facial treatments and look out for the fabulous facial treatments. Do not forget to sense that the skin on your eyes, are also in need of special and unique care.

How To Rent Skiing And Snowboarding Gear December 26, 2006

So, you’re planning a skiing or snowboarding trip. You have your travel and lodging plans all set up, but have you gotten your equipment yet? While buying your own equipment may be more convenient, it’s also a lot more expensive. If you have never been skiing before, you may want to consider renting in case you find you don’t like it. You can always buy equipment the next time you go. Renting also makes it affordable for people who can’t spend hundreds of dollars to buy equipment. Plus, you won’t have to lug all the extra baggage on the plane or in the car. If you have children, you know how quickly kids can grow out of their clothes. When you rent, you don’t have to buy your kids new equipment every year or two when they grow out of the old stuff.

Once you’ve decided to rent equipment, you should make sure to reserve it well before you take your trip. This is especially important if you’re going during peak season. If you wait until you get there, you may have to do a lot of searching to find appropriate sizes and equipment. You definitely want to make reservations if you’re renting snowboarding equipment. Snowboarding has greatly increased in popularity and many stores haven’t caught up with demand.

You will probably have a choice of renting equipment at the mountain, or from other stores in the area. At certain resorts where there’s not much of a town you should probably rent at the mountain. At other resorts, you may have many other rental options. The benefit of renting elsewhere is that you’ll probably get a better price. If you’re only renting for one day, the mountain will probably be more convenient because you won’t have to carry equipment as far.

If you decide to rent at the mountain, you should arrive an hour before you plan to ski or snowboard. This will give you time to get your equipment and get fitted. If you rent elsewhere, it’s best to get the equipment the day before you go out. This way, you’ll be able to find other accommodations if they do not have the appropriate equipment. When you get there, you should be ready ahead of time with everyone’s shoe sizes, heights, and weights. While some people may want to fudge on their weight, you should be honest. The type of equipment you need depends on your weight. If you give the wrong weight, you may be risking your own safety. If you have a very large shoe size, you should make sure the shop you rent from has the right size boots. If not, you should buy equipment online before you show up. You should ask the shop before you do this; you may be able to buy boots that fit their equipment.

When you get ready to sign the contract for your equipment, they will offer you insurance on the equipment. SAY YES! While your chance damaging the equipment is probably fairly low, it’s still a great idea. Cost for insurance is generally about a dollar a day. That’s 3 or 4 dollars per trip. Compare this to the hundreds of dollars you could pay to fix damage to skis or a snowboard. And that’s nothing compared to the cost if you completely ruin the equipment. You should also remember that it doesn’t take that much to damage equipment. A mountain is covered in snow when you ski on it, but under that snow are rocks and branches. If the snow cover is thin on a mountain, you risk hitting these objects and you generally can’t see them to avoid them. For your winter sports active wear check out http://www.allshowsports.info

Hopefully these tips will help you get the right equipment and get you to the mountain. Have a great trip!

Cheap Bedroom Decorating Ideas December 26, 2006

Did you ever wake up one morning, look around your bedroom and want to pull the cover back over your head? Join the club. Humans are one of the few creatures that frequently rearrange and re-do their living space. Bedrooms are the most frequent redecorating candidate. Every so often, for reasons unknown to many, we look at that cozy nest we carefully created and think “ugh.” It’s boring, it’s outdated, I’m sick of that color. Grand visions of a totally gutted and remodeled space may fill your mind, until you look at your bank balance. Don’t be glum! Redecorating doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg!

The quickest way to a new look is a splash of paint. Even if you use the same color (because you had paint left over), a fresh coat of color reinvigorates the room, makes it look cleaner, newer. If you’ve grown tired of your wall color, choose a new one, drape protective cloths over the furniture and get rolling. The endorphins pumping through your veins after painting the whole room may just fire up some other decorating ideas for your bedroom.

One reason a fresh coat of paint reinvents a room is that the different color gives the space a whole new identity. The same idea applies to your bedding. If your budget is extremely limited, you might start by adding new pillow shams. Usually sold as a separate piece from comforters, sheets, or pillowcases, a sham is a highly decorative pillow covering. When making the bed in the morning, you slip your covered pillow into the sham-remove the sham at night before you go to sleep. If you find a great deal on pillow shams, buy a bunch-you can fill them with plain foam pillows and give your bed a luxurious look by piling them on.

A new comforter or bedspread is another way to redecorate your bedroom inexpensively. Check local malls for discount linen stores, or browse the Internet for great deals on beautiful, but cheap comforters and bed skirts.

A simple way to create a coordinated look without spending a lot of money is to use bed sheets to make window treatments. Often, comforters are sold in “bed sets,” which contain the comforter, as well as a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases. Since you sheets will usually be covered by the comforter, you can use the fitted and flat sheets as material to frame bedroom windows. If you don’t sew, use the special “no-sew” fabric glue sold in craft and fabric stores to hem a nice edge. In a pinch, you can hold a hem using a hot glue gun.

Decorating or redecorating a bedroom is often a matter of changing one or two elements. You can have a new look even if you don’t feel up to the task of choosing colors or shopping for the best bedding deal. Sometimes, all that’s needed is to re-arrange the furniture. And if that simple change leads to others, good for you!

Running Racing Flats and Finding a Winning Shoe December 26, 2006

If you are a runner and a jogger you generally will work out in training shoes, which have lots of cushion and prevent you from injury. This is a good idea to protect your knees and prevent you from getting shin splints.

However, if you are involved in running races such as 10Ks or marathons you will need to get some racing flats. Those are running racing shoes, which do not have much cushion and are made simply for light-weight and speed. They are the types of shoes you must wear if you expect to win.

They do not have anywhere close to the level of comfort or cushioning that you are use to in your jogging shoes. When buying running racing flats there are a few things you should be aware of;

1.) You need to find a shoe, which is completely stiff on the back heel. You should be able to take your hands and put your thumb on the sole of the shoe and your fingers on the back of the shoe and have a tough time crushing the back and towards the front.

2.) Another thing you need to look for when buying racing flats is that the area of the shoe where the ball of the foot is; is completely flexible and you should be able to bend it all the way back towards the laces extremely easily.

3.) The last thing you must consider when buying racing flats if you intend to win races is to make sure that they are extremely light weight and comfortable to wear.

Racing Flat running shoes may not be so comfortable to run in for a whole marathon but they should fit your foot snug and be somewhat comfortable and you need a pair if you are to win. Please consider all this in 2006. For great resource on finding the right running shoes check out http://www.allrunningshoes.info
